Extended Vacation or Temporary Disconnections Residents who wish to temporarily discontinue water service may do so by calling the Utility Billing Office at 801-569-5020. A fee will be charged in order to re-establish service. (See Uniform Schedule of Fees and Service Charges for fee information.) Garbage Each resident is billed for solid waste collection. The City has a contract with a collector to pick up your solid waste. Garbage is taken to the Trans-Jordan Landfill, which is partially owned by the City. The garbage cans are the property of the City and must not be removed from the property they have been assigned to. All solid waste must be inside your garbage can and the can must be placed at the curbside for collection on the scheduled pick up day no later than 6:30 a.m. The City assigns one garbage container to each residential property (additional containers may be requested for an extra charge). Each residence can have two additional containers plus their original one. If you need to request another container, call the Utility Billing Office at 801-569-5020. Additional garbage cans must be kept for a minimum of six months. They are delivered within 3-5 working days after the request is made. You may return extra cans after a six month period by calling the office and requesting that the cans be retrieved. Customers are required to provide Utility Billing with the can number. Prior to retrieval, the container must be empty, free of all debris, and scrubbed clean on both inside and outside, otherwise it will not be picked up. If you have any questions regarding solid waste, recycling, or green waste pick up, including missed pick-ups, please call Ace Disposal at 801-363-9995. Current Garbage Rates Green Waste The City of West Jordan provides a green waste can to recycle organic items. The following items may be placed in the green can: leaves, grass clippings, shrubs, and all other compost. (No plastic bags, dirt, sod, concrete, rocks, or cardboard.) Do not overfill the container, branches must not stick out, and the waste should fall freely when dumped. Residents who put unacceptable items in the green waste can will be cited and recorded. On the third violation, the container will be picked up and the resident will have to pay a $50 service fee to reinstate service. The green waste can should be placed at the curbside along with your garbage and recycling cans for pick up every week from the first Monday in April to last Friday collection in November. Collection is subject to change due to weather conditions. If requested, an additional green waste container can be delivered for an additional monthly fee of $5.00 per can. The additional can must be kept for a minimum of six months. To request an additional green waste can, call the Utility Billing Office at 801-569-5020. Current Garbage Rates Rental Utilities The utility account will always be in the name of the legal property owner. The City is not required to allow a tenant’s name to be added to the account. The property owner is the one who is liable for any delinquencies on the account. Sewer The City is a partial owner of the South Valley Water Reclamation Facility, which operates and maintains a regional sewage treatment facility. The sewer rate is adjusted each October based on the average monthly usage of water during the previous winter months. Current Sewer Rates Street Lighting Well lit streets lower the rate of vehicle accidents at night and promote the safety of our neighborhoods and businesses. All dwellings receiving a monthly utility bill will be charged $1.71 per month for street lighting. This charge helps cover the cost to operate, repair and maintain existing streetlights along with installing new ones as development continues. Terminating Service In order to terminate utility services, please call the Utility Billing Office at 801-569-5020. Title companies do not have authorization to terminate utility accounts. Utility Payments Billing due dates are set to allow approximately 19-25 days between payments (average is 21 days). Payment for current charges is due upon receipt of the bill. Accounts are considered delinquent when payments are received after the due date. Any unpaid balance will incur a delinquency assessment after the specified due date at a rate of 1.5% (Annual Percentage Rate 18%.) The city accepts the following methods of payment for utility bills: - Check made out to the City of West Jordan
- Cash
- Cashier's Check
- Money Order
- Visa / Mastercard
Online Payments Online payments can be made for the total balance of the account only and require the PIN that is printed on your utility bill. To set up your own PIN number, call the Utility Billing office at 801-569-5020. To ensure that your account remains secure, the city strongly recommends that you change your PIN number regularly by calling the Utility Billing office. Water The City owns and operates four wells that provide residents with about 15% of their water. The remaining water is purchased from Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. This water is obtained from stream runoff of the Wasatch Mountains, various wells, and the Central Utah Project. The water is treated to meet the standards of the Safe Drinking Water Act as well as local health department standards. Samples of water are tested continuously at various points throughout the system for quality assurance. Most homes use 6,000-30,000 gallons per month during the winter. During the summer, the monthly usage increases to about 50,000-100,000 gallons of water. Water meters, which are the property of the City, measure water usage each month. The City has the right to access all meters. Meters are read each month and usage is billed monthly. Dispute a Water Bill When a resident disputes the amount of their water bill, they should call a Utility Billing Representative at 801-569-5020 who will explain the billing history to the resident. If there is further question, the City’s policy is to send a Utility Service Technician to re-read the meter and/or check for a faulty meter or a water leak. Faulty Meter In the event of a faulty meter, the billing department will attempt to establish an accurate usage amount. If actual usage cannot be determined, the resident will be charged based on usage one year previous to the same month. If this billing history is not available, or if it is impractical to use, the average usage will be charged. Leaks If an excessive utility bill results from a water leak, the Utility Service Technician will first determine where the loss of water is originating. (Resident’s or City’s side of the meter.) - A leak on the City’s side of the meter will be repaired at the City’s expense.
- Leaks occurring on the resident’s side of the meter must be repaired at their own expense.
- Residents finding that a leak has occurred in the main line from their meter to the home or in the stop and waste valve of their sprinkler system will be given a discount to the wholesale rate of the difference of water usage greater than the same billing period one year previous. An invoice or written statement of the repair will be presented to the Utility Billing Department to verify that the repair has been made. If there is no prior water usage record, then average usage will be charged.
- Repairs must be made and reported to Utility Billing within 45 days of the last billing date.
- If repairs are not made in the 45 days, regular rates will be charged, and no adjustments made.
- Interest resulting from leaks will be written off if repairs are made within the 45 days from the last billing date.
If the efforts by the Utility Billing Representative do not satisfy the resident, an appeal should first be made to the Utility Billing Supervisor, second to the Director of Finance or his designee. Current Water Rates
