One of the primary responsibilities of the City of West Jordan is to provide quality and cost-effective "infrastructure" services to the residents and businesses in the community. Infrastructure is the physical systems that deliver water, collect and treat sewage, collect and dispose of solid waste, protect properties from flooding and storm water contamination, and provide safe transportation systems including paths, streets and highways (in coordination with mass transit providers). Together, these services are considered the city's utility services. Rate Increase The City of West Jordan's utility rates are calculated to cover operating costs (fuel, vehicles, electricity, contractors, water purchases, wastewater treatment, state/federal regulations). The storm water fee is necessary to bring the city's systems into compliance with state and federal regulations and maintain the storm water system that helps control flooding during rainstorms. Your City Council and management are very aware of the economic challenges facing West Jordan residents and businesses. When setting rates, the City Council selects the lowest rate that still allows the City to continue providing an acceptable level of service. The City is committed to providing excellent service for the lowest cost possible. Fee Schedule Water and Storm Rate Staff Report (NOTE: The Council voted in 2012 to increase the water rates 4% not the recommended 5% because the Council voted to cut water conservation programs, resulting in a savings of approximately $100,000.) Water Rates Water rates increase by 4% May 1, 2012 for both the fixed monthly "availability" charge and also the "commodity" charge per 1,000 gallons. The rate increase covers the higher wholesale water costs the city pays Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District and costs associated with capital facilities construction (pipes, storage reservoirs, valves, monitoring systems). Storm Water Fee Storm Water rates increase May 1, 2012 from $1.80 to $3.65 to cover costs of maintaining the storm water system. The fee is $3.65 per month for single family residential properties. HOA’s and condo associations will be charged for all property under their management at $3.65 per ERU (equivalent residential unit, or 0.25 acres). Commercial and industrial properties will also be charged $3.65 per ERU. Properties over 20 acres may receive a discounted rate if the property is mostly undeveloped (open fields, no hardscape, no buildings) and retains a large proportion of rain runoff onsite. The City will contact the large property owners if a special rate needs to be negotiated. Every resident of the city is a valued customer. We believe each of our customers has the right to expect quality, timely, and friendly service. Customer service for city utilities is a joint effort of the Public Works and Finance departments of the city. City Hall Finance Department, first floor 8000 S. Redwood Rd.
